Breastfeeding and Surgery

My daughter (16 months) is having surgery for ear tubes in the morning. I was told she could not have breast milk after midnight. I thought breast milk was considered a clear liquid, which would mean she could nurse up until an hour or so before. Which is true? Help!

Thanks, Lisa and Abi

Dear Lisa,

I hope all went well with the surgery and that it was not too traumatic an experience. In answer to your question, breastmilk is not really considered a clear liquid. However, its digestion time is far quicker than artificial baby milks, and some hospitals have therefore changed their policies regarding breastfeeding and surgery to reflect this.

They usually will allow breastfeeding up to 2-4 hours before surgery, which is certainly far better than "nothing after midnight." Even though it is now "after the fact,"  I would be happy to mail you information to share with your doctor/hospital. I have printed info that is given out by Boston Children's hospital reflecting more liberal guidelines. Just let me know your address if you would like a copy.
