Can breastfeeeding mom eat sushi?

QUESTION: I am a prenatal nurse in Canada. One of my client's asked if it is safe to eat sushi while breastfeeding ?

The concern with sushi is twofold: One is the bacterial content of raw foods which can be reduced by marinating, grilling or even putting on some of the traditional marinades. Listeria is one of the more recent concerns, and that does require cooking to totally eliminate its risk.

The other is the freshness of the fish - and where it was caught - deep water fish? Away from contaminants? However, both these concerns are not only for breastfeeding - but for any person. So, if the sushi is freshly caught, from reputable dealers, managed and prepared correctly, it should pose no hazard to the mom, or the baby.

The decision as to whether to "risk" sushi should be made based on a well-informed decision, whether breastfeeding or not.
