Please help,
I have had mastitis twice in one month. Every time I try to wean, I get
it. I have tried the slow approach but my milk supply never seems to dwindle. I returned
to work today and do not have a place where I can pump. I would like to nurse my baby in
the morning and at night if my milk supply will let me but that's it. I have spoken to
doctors and nurses and they tell me that some women have a harder time than others. Do
you have any advice that would help me?
Sincerely,
Chez Echeverri
 Chez,
Your other sources are correct- some women have a harder time than
others. For you, the slow approach will have to get slower. This means eliminating only
one feeding a week. And emptying your breasts for the other feedings. Do you get any
breaks at work? The US congress is working on a bill making it mandatory for employers to
allow employees to take time to express milk for breastfeeding infants. So that even if
you have go into a bathroom stall, you could hand express to comfort and discard the milk.
Find someone to teach you how to hand express, or get a book called The Womanly Art of
Breastfeeding by La Leche League to teach yourself. You will have to express to comfort or
you will get mastitis again. Call your local La Leche League or a Certified Lactation
Consultant in your area for more specific details. For bad engorgement, try cabbage
leaves. Yes, from just a green cabbage, placed in your bra on the most sore spot. Leave it
in until it wilts. Then replace it with a new leaf. Of course, not at work or when you are
out of the house, unless you are desperate. Good luck.
