Mysoline (primadone) and breastfeeding

NAME: Lori

Your thoughts on the safety of breastfeeding with the drug mysoline (primidone) 250mg bid. Our doctor is taking a wait-and-see approach, i.e. let's try it and observe the baby (I'm at 38 weeks w/ first child). Thanks!

Lori,

According to my resources, it is listed as use-with-caution medication by the AAP - American Academy of Pediatrics (i.e. watch the baby for side effects such as sedation - way too sleepy for a newborn -  which may lead to slow weight gain, because the baby sleeps too much and doesn't eat enough).

The obvious solution is to make sure the baby nurses enough times per 24 hours with good long periods of swallowing ( 8 times is minimum. 10 to 12 times per 24 hours is not out of line after the first couple of days). This is the type of behavior to look out for, not what has been reported to occur regularly.

If you are really concerned, then the baby's blood levels of this medication and its byproducts can be measured. So I believe that your doctor has the right idea  -  watch the baby.

Good Luck
