My baby passed blood in his stool last
Monday. It was a small amount, probably less than a teaspoon. His
doctor did blood tests and x-rays, and ruled out intussusception. He passed blood again on Friday, the doctor told me to call her if he did
it again on Saturday. He did. She told us to go to the emergency room.
They did a blood
test. The emergency room doctor told my doctor the results over the phone.
The
pediatrician says Tristan is allergic to my breastmilk. She mentioned this might be a
possibility after she ruled out intussusception. She has never been supportive of me
breastfeeding Tristan. Is it possible for babies to be allergic to
breastmilk? If so, what are
some symptoms? Tristan is very healthy and hardly ever cries.

Do not walk, but run to another pediatrician and to a
gastroenterologist and an allergist. Also, check your breasts and nipples
very carefully for any cracks that may be bleeding while he breastfeeds that could account for the blood
in his stools. I think it is unlikely that a well gaining baby could suddenly develop an
allergy to mom's breastmilk after three months. Next time, speak directly to the examining
doctor yourself, and don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion. Do not stop
breastfeeding until you have seen at least two specialists who agree on a
diagnosis and
plan of treatment.
